Two Ways to Get Learner Cover

⏱️

Short-Term (Temporary)

Cover from 1 hour to 5 months. Perfect for intensive practice before your test. Bought instantly online, starts immediately.

📅

Annual Learner Policy

If you're learning over a longer period, an annual policy can be more cost-effective. Builds a full year's no-claims entitlement once you pass.

🏫

Instructor's Car

Your driving instructor's vehicle is covered under their own policy. You only need learner insurance when practising in a private car.

🛡️

Protects Owner's NCD

Learner insurance is separate from the car owner's policy. If you have an accident, their no-claims discount is completely unaffected.

What to Look for When Comparing This Cover

A few things worth checking before you buy, whichever UK insurer or broker you compare.

📐

Indemnity limit

Check the limit matches what your contracts, landlord or clients require — common tiers are £1m, £2m, £5m and £10m depending on trade and risk.

📄

Claims basis

Professional and liability covers are often "claims-made" — cover depends on holding a live policy when a claim is made, not just when the work happened.

🔍

Exclusions

Read what's excluded, not just what's covered. Sub-contractor work, specific activities, or work carried out overseas are common gaps.

FCA authorisation

Before buying, confirm any insurer or broker is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority — check the register at register.fca.org.uk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can supervise a learner driver?
The supervising driver must be at least 21 years old, have held a full UK driving licence for at least 3 years, and be fit to drive. They must sit in the front passenger seat and the car must display L plates.
How quickly can learner insurance start?
Most short-term learner policies start within minutes of purchase online. You'll receive your documents by email and can begin driving immediately.
Does learner insurance count towards my no-claims discount?
Some annual learner policies allow you to build a no-claims discount that transfers to your first full policy after passing. Short-term policies typically don't build NCD. Check with individual providers.
Can I get learner cover for an automatic car?
Yes — learner insurance is available for both manual and automatic vehicles. Note that passing your test in an automatic restricts you to driving automatics on a full licence.
